Waconia, Minn. - Just like Johan Santana the Tigers lost their first game since last summer in a 3-0 setback to Waconia. Although the Tiger’s streak was a bit less impressive than Santana’s, (stretching only one game) they lost it in a similar fashion – A pitcher’s duel.
Waconia’s Rob Wagener was to the Tiger’s as Bartolo Colon was to the Twins. Wagener went seven innings striking out nine and allowing only two hits. The Tiger’s only threat came in the fifth after a running reached on an error, Dan Huber (pictured) smoked a two out double to put runners at second and third. Adam Hofmann took the Matthew LeCroy role and ended the threat with a ground out to the short shop. *If some of this doesn’t make sense watch Twin’s highlights from Sunday against the Angels.
Travis Van Doren came in the final two innings for Waconia and struck out five batters on his way to his first save of the season. On the day, 14 of the Tiger’s 27 outs came from strikeouts.
Shane Hoffman (0-1) took the loss as he made his first appearance on the mound, and at the ballpark, as the new skipper went four innings. He gave up three unearned runs in the fourth after a pair of Tiger errors. Dave Kreft went the final four innings for Team Tigertown, giving up only one hit. Kreft apparently put all his energy into this pitching, as he is the first Tiger this season to take home the un-coveted Sombrero for striking out three times on the day.
Dan Weldon and Ryan Witt joined Huber as the only Tigers with hits in the game.
The Tigers are now 1-1 on the season while Waconia is 1-0. The Tigers return to the friendly confines of Tiger Park for their home opener on Friday, May 6 th at 7:30 p.m. when they take on the Shakopee Indians.
